600 sq ft is a small site, and the mistake everyone makes is trying to fit two full bedrooms plus a dining into it. The layout below gives you one proper bedroom, one smaller one, and a hall that is not a corridor — because the passage is doing double duty instead of being dead space.

Setbacks assumed: Front 3 ft, rear 2 ft, sides 1.5 ft each. Setback rules vary by state, city, road width and number of floors — confirm yours with your local authority before you finalise anything.

Room schedule

Sizes are internal (carpet) dimensions. Add 9 inches for external walls and 4.5 inches for partitions when you set these out on the envelope.

Designing a 20 × 30

At 17 ft internal width you get one 10 ft room plus a 7 ft kitchen, or two 8 ft rooms. Decide that first — it fixes the whole plan.

Leave the staircase out of the ground floor plan if a first floor is more than a few years away. A 3 × 10 stair well is 7% of your carpet area sitting unused.

On 600 sq ft, an open kitchen attached to the hall buys back about 40 sq ft of usable space. Vastu-wise the cooking platform still belongs in the south-east corner of that combined space.
